Spring Time: Birds are flying again. They are building their nests
Soon, Spring will be around. And the birds will start flying again. They will come back to build their nests and raise their young. Many of them will return to pre-historic habitats that are now shared by humans. So get ready to have some visitors in your back yard. You will have pigeon, crow, blue jay, starling, cliff swallow, acorn woodpecker, crows, geese and ducks. What can you do to protect yourself and your investments? Well, droppings will be everywhere any way. They will be on your cars, homes, patio equipment and swimming pools.
What can you do to avoid being bothered?
Reduce or eliminate the food, shelter and water sources. Well, it may be easier said than done. Most birds pick your homes as their shelter. You can not eliminate your homes. You can remove standing water. Make sure there it flows away. The more mud there is around, the easier it will be for cliff swallows to build their nests on your home. If you have to remove some nests, make sure you do so before they lay eggs and complete their construction. If eggs are present, you can not destroy the nest. February, March, April and May will see the arrival of the cliff swallows around here. Some birds are protected under the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. If they are protected, you may be limited in what you can do. Go to www.fws.gov/migratorybirds/intrnltr/treatlaw.html
